Second Workshop on Maritime Affairs in the Adriatic and Ionian Macro-region. Trieste, June 12-13, 2012

TRIESTE – To deepen the dialogue with the local communities and the other stakeholders on the needs underlying the Strategy, discuss together the issues illustrated, and collect all the contributions in view of the forthcoming setting of a plan of action. These are some of the main aims of the international workshop on maritime policies in the Adriatic and Ionian macro-region strategy promoted by the European Commission in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, which will take place on June 12 and 13 in Trieste, at the Stazione Marittima. The Italian Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Marta Dassù, will participate in the workshop, to which have been invited: the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Mrs Maria Damanaki, the Presidents of the Regions involved in the Macro-region which is being set up, the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the member states of the Central European Initiative (CEI). The participation of speakers from all the member states of the Adriatic Ionic area is also forseen. The program will be carried out in the course of two half days. During the first session on the afternoon of June 12, the European Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Macro-region will be presented. Three distinct thematic tables will follow, aimed at collecting the remarks and recommendations from the shakeholders and institutions involved, in order to develop conclusions and suggestions to help define the Adriatic-Ionian strategy on the following specific issues:

  • Blue Growth– tourism, research, and innovation in the maritime sector
  • Competitive and sustainable transport and security of the maritime space
  • Protection of the marine environment and fisheries.

During the second session, June 13 morning, the conclusions of the three working tables will be illustrated and the Italian Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Marta Dassù, the Authorities coming from the 18 CEI countries, and the Presidents of the Italian Regions involved in the Macro-region, which is being set up, will deliver their speeches.

The event is particularly important in view of the presence of numerous national and international authorities. Furthermore, the macro-regional strategy is an integrated framework aimed at providing effective and targeted responses to problems affecting large areas of the European Union, at translating into practice the concept of territorial cohesion, environmental protection, and sustainable economic and social development, without creating new structures, but improving the employment of already existing institutions, funds, and regulations.
