Tourism is one of the most important economic activities and sources of employment in the region of Emilia Romagna. During 2003, 7 617 176 tourists visited Emilia Romagna, of which 1 957 072, or 15.5%, were foreigners. In that same year, 37 024 560 overnight stays were recorded, of which 9 244 022, or 25%, were those of foreign tourists. The average length of stay for tourists in the region during 2003 was 4.86 days. The receptive tourism infrastructure between 1989 and 2003 was dominated by hotels with four and five stars (4899), and complimentary facilities (106). In 2002, the number of overnight stays in hotels was 30 023 362, while in complementary facilities it was 7 001 080. The tourism industry employs 126 000 people in Emilia Romagna.
