Tourism is one of the most important economic activities and sources of employment in the region of Abruzzo. During 2003, 1 344 054 tourists visited Abruzzo, of which 189 254, or 14%, were foreigners. In that same year, 6 856 015 overnight stays were recorded, of which 1 065 481, or 15.5%, were those of foreign tourists. The average length of stay for tourists in the region during 2003 was 5.10 days. The receptive tourism infrastructure between 1989 and 2003 was dominated by hotels (769), most of which have three stars, followed by private apartments (84), agrotourisms (251) and other receptive facilities (32). In 2002, the number of overnight stays in hotels was 26 435 402, while those in complementary facilities was 28 967 508.
