Agriculture accounts for 4.5% of the economy in Abruzzo, and employed 29 000 people in 2001. In 2000, the total number of farms in the agriculture industry was 82 833, largely made up of family farms whose primary economic activity is agriculture. The total amount of arable land in that same year was 659 911 hectares, while the amount used was 214 941 hectares, the majority of which was used for planting. The number of agricultural businesses decreased by 22.4% between 1990-2000, so that small businesses that are active in agriculture and fishing now make up 1.3% of all active firms. During 2000 there were 82 833 firms in the agriculture industry, and the fishing industry generated 32 850 quintals (approx 3300 tonnes) of fish in total.
